How I Got My First 100 Paying Users — Without Ads

When starting out, every founder has the same question: "How do I get my first users?" I’ve grown my product to over 1,000 users now, and I can confidently say that going from 0 to 1 is one of the hardest parts of the entire journey.

Now that I’ve found a path that works, I'm sharing the exact playbook I used so you can do it too

Here’s the step-by-step playbook I used to reach my first 100 paying users without spending a single dollar on ads

Step 1: Solve a Problem You Deeply Understand

I noticed a painful pattern: talented people were building products that failed, not because the execution was poor, but because they lacked proper idea validation and didn't follow a clear process.

This was the problem I decided to own.

My idea was for an AI-powered solution to guide founders through this validation maze. Before building anything, I needed to know if others felt this pain as acutely as I did.

Step 2: Validate Your Idea & Find Your First Believers on Reddit

Reddit, specifically communities like r/SaaS and r/indiehackers, became my proving ground. But you can't just drop a link and expect results. You need to offer value.

I created a post titled: “Let’s exchange feedback!”

The premise was simple and mutually beneficial: if you give me feedback on my idea and the problem, I’ll give you detailed feedback on your project in return. A win-win.

I linked to a short survey focused on three things:

  1. Understanding the problem from their perspective.

  2. Learning about their personal experiences with it.

  3. Getting their honest input on my proposed solution.

About 8-10 founders responded. The quality of their feedback was incredible and confirmed that the idea had real potential. Crucially, these 8-10 people were not just data points; they were my future first users.

With this initial validation, I spent the next 30 days building a lean, focused MVP.

Step 3: Launch to a Warm Audience

My "launch" wasn't a big bang on Product Hunt. It was targeted and personal. I went back to the exact places where I had validated the idea:
  1. Posted in the same subreddits: I announced that the tool we had discussed was now live and ready to use.

  2. DM'd the original survey respondents: I sent a personal message to every founder who had given me feedback, thanking them and letting them know the first version of the solution they helped shape was ready.

Because they had a hand in its creation, they were invested. They felt the problem, and now I was offering them a solution. This is how I got my very first handful of users.

Step 4: The Grind to 100: My Daily Content & Community Playbook

With the initial users on board, the next goal was 100. My strategy was pure content and community engagement, primarily on X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. Because the audience is best for saas products.

My approach wasn't to spam my product link and also you should never do that too. It was to become a valuable member of the founder community. My posts revolved around four key pillars:

  • Building in Public: Sharing wins, losses, metrics, and learnings. This builds trust and brings people along on your journey.

  • Giving Genuine Advice: Answering questions and offering help based on my experiences.

  • Connecting with Other Founders: Engaging in real conversations, supporting others, and building relationships.

  • Mentioning My Product (When Relevant): Only when my product was a direct solution to a problem being discussed did I bring it up naturally.

This strategy required consistency. Here was my daily and weekly cadence:

  • On X: Aim for 3 value-driven posts per day and 30 thoughtful replies to others in the community.

  • On Reddit: I would repost my best-performing posts of X into more detailed, long-form content for relevant subreddits with adding a little bit touch every 2-3 days.

It took me 1month of this consistent effort to reach my first 100 users. and this is the most important step consistency is the key.

Why This Strategy Works

This approach is simple because it's built on a foundation to give users best value of content.

  1. It’s Accessible to Everyone: It doesn’t require a marketing budget, only your time and willingness to help others.

  2. You’re Building a Foundational Skill: Creating content and engaging with a community is a marketing skill that will serve you for the entire lifetime of your business. You get better at it with every post and reply.

  3. Most important, It Builds Audience: People start to follow you because of your insights, not just for your product. This creates a advantage that competitors can't replicate easily

The Journey Continues

From 0 to 100 users is a massive milestone. But the work doesn't stop there. The journey from 100 to 1,000 (and now toward 10,000 for me) is about taking the feedback from those early adopters and relentlessly improving your product.

My advice is always listens to your users, build what they need, keep the saas model always updated and free from bugs and keep showing up for your community. That's the real secret for a sustainable growth.
